GTA 6 Latest News: Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for a big change to weapons and how they are carried. Rockstar North co-studio lead Rob Nelson said Jason and Lucia will not be able to roam Leonida with a full set of guns hidden like it is nothing.
A key part of the update is how other people act when they spot a weapon. Earlier Grand Theft Auto titles let players show off strong guns in busy spots with little trouble, unless they pointed at someone. Rockstar wants the game world to react more like a real place.
GTA 6 Latest News: NPCs Will Notice When Players Carry Guns
With this new setup, what you carry and how you carry it will matter in free roam. NPCs will respond based on the weapon and the way it is shown.
For example, a long gun sitting on the back is less likely to draw attention. But if Jason or Lucia holds a long gun in public, people may feel uneasy. Pedestrians can move away as a result. Police may also react if a weapon is carried in plain sight.
Nelson put it in plain terms. “It depends. The reactions are much more nuanced than before. So if you’ve got a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it, and they react and start moving away from you.”
GTA 6 Will Not Hide Large Guns in Your Pockets
Rockstar is also changing how the main characters carry weapons on their bodies.
Handguns work one way. Players can keep two concealed handguns ready, and they do not have to show them to anyone. Long guns are different. A player can carry up to two, but they stay out in the open. One long gun can be slung across the character’s back, while the other can stay in the player’s hand.
Nelson described it like this: “You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns, and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off-hand and one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.”
GTA 6 Weapon Storage Will Make Cars More Important
When players want a bigger weapon set, they will need storage spots. New reports and previews point to weapons being kept in vehicles. The player’s personal vehicle can hold a wider group of weapons that the player selects. There are also weapon lockers at Ammu-Nation. Rockstar even said that big weapons can stay in the trunk of a stolen car, as long as the player still has that vehicle.
This setup makes vehicles do more than just move you around. Players might need to pick what weapons to bring before an activity starts. After that, they would not just swap to any gun from an unlimited stash.
GTA 6 Could Make Weapon Choice Part of Every Mission
This new system changes more than what shows on the inventory screen. It may affect how players plan missions and roam.
If a player goes into a quiet area, they might bring only concealed handguns. Someone preparing for a major robbery could bring long guns but risk attracting attention while moving through public areas.
Recent reports also indicate that GTA 6 will make weapons feel heavier, with stronger recoil and greater impact than previous entries. Jason and Lucia can also hand weapons to each other, adding another layer to how players manage their arsenal.
GTA 6 Latest News: Rockstar Is Pushing GTA 6 Toward a More Reactive Open World
The weapon system fits into a much larger change in GTA 6. Rockstar has been adding more detailed reactions and interconnected systems throughout Leonida, allowing player actions to influence how the world responds.
Recent previews have highlighted changes involving police behaviour, driving, weapon handling, character relationships and other everyday activities. Nelson has repeatedly described the goal as creating a world where players can make choices without constantly feeling like they are interacting with disconnected game systems.
For GTA 6, that means even something as simple as walking down the street with a rifle could change the way an encounter unfolds.
GTA 6 Latest News: Players Will Need to Think Before Pulling Out a Weapon
The new system could become one of the biggest differences between GTA 5 and GTA 6 during everyday gameplay.
Instead of treating weapons as invisible equipment, Rockstar is making firearms part of the physical world. Players will need to think about what they carry, where they store it and whether pulling it out in public is worth the attention.
That approach also supports Rockstar’s broader push toward realism without completely removing the freedom that defines Grand Theft Auto. Players can still carry powerful weapons, but GTA 6 will make them manage those weapons more carefully.
